The thinking behind the garden
Start with the space you have.
Garden in Place is an independent gardening publication for balconies, patios, and other small outdoor spaces.
A garden has to fit the life around it.
A balcony may have a narrow route from the door, a hard-to-reach tap, changing light, or wind that reaches some corners more than others. We begin with those details before suggesting more plants or equipment.
Our guides focus on decisions you can check in your own space: where you can reach a pot, how you will carry water, what happens to runoff, and what to do when a routine becomes too much. The space planner helps you sketch those questions before you commit to a layout.
When a gardening claim needs support, the guide links to a source readers can inspect. Our diagrams and illustrative images help explain decisions; they are not records of gardens we have tested.
